Young Ace received his first electric guitar as a Christmas present in 1964. He was just 13 years old. He never took formal lessons. Instead, he taught himself by listening to his heroes.

Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, and Led Zeppelin shaped his raw, electrifying style. He earned the nickname “Ace” in high school. Friends said he was “a real ace” at getting dates with girls.

Early Musical Journey

Frehley started playing in local bands as a teenager. At 16, he saw the Who and Cream perform at RKO Theater in Manhattan. The show changed his life forever. He later said, “The Who really inspired me towards theatrical rock.”

He briefly joined a gang as a teenager. Music became his escape. He told Goldmine magazine he used band gigs as an excuse. When the gang went out on weekends, he’d say, “I can’t, I have a gig.”

Founding Kiss and Creating the Spaceman

In late 1972, Frehley answered a classified ad in the Village Voice. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley were looking for a lead guitarist. They wanted someone with “flash and ability.”

Frehley didn’t make the best first impression. He showed up wearing mismatched sneakers. Stanley recalled thinking a bum had walked in off the street. But when Frehley plugged in his guitar, everything changed.

“As soon as he played, it was like, ‘This is it,'” Simmons remembered. The four musicians created Kiss in 1973. Alongside Peter Criss on drums, they formed one of classic rock’s most iconic lineups.

The Birth of Space Ace

Each Kiss member adopted comic book-style makeup and personas. Frehley became “The Spaceman,” also known as “Space Ace.” His otherworldly character captured fans’ imaginations worldwide.

For over a decade, the band kept their real faces hidden. This anonymity became part of Kiss’s mystique. Frehley told Rolling Stone in 1977, “Onstage I’m Ace Frehley, and offstage I’m a kid from the Bronx.”

Greatest Hits and Signature Sound

Kiss struggled initially with their first two albums. But 1975’s “Alive!” changed everything. The double live album catapulted the band to superstar status. It captured their explosive energy perfectly.

Frehley’s guitar work on “Alive!” became legendary. His solo on “She” particularly stood out. Fans considered it one of the greatest live guitar performances ever recorded.

In September 1978, all four Kiss members released solo albums simultaneously. The move aimed to relieve tensions within the band. Surprisingly, Frehley’s album became the biggest commercial success.

His self-titled debut debuted at number 26 on Billboard. It eventually went platinum. The album featured his cover of “New York Groove.” The song became a Top 20 hit and remains his signature solo track.

Frehley’s Comet and Beyond

Frehley left Kiss in 1982. Creative differences and substance abuse issues contributed to his departure. He formed his own band, Frehley’s Comet, in 1984. The name cleverly played on his Spaceman persona.

Major guitarists who cite Frehley as an influence include Slash from Guns N’ Roses, Dimebag Darrell from Pantera, Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine, and John 5 from Motley Crue. Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready said, “I would not have picked up a guitar without Ace and KISS’s influence.”

The Unschooled Master

Frehley took pride in his lack of formal training. In a 2009 interview, he stated, “I’m an anomaly, I’m an un-schooled musician.” Yet he became one of the world’s most famous guitar players. Go figure, he said.

He told Guitar World in 2024, “I’m a sloppy guitar player!” But he embraced spontaneity and simple ingredients. His solos distilled 25 years of American rock guitar into pure, plagiarizable perfection.

The Reunion Years and Beyond

In 1996, Frehley and Peter Criss rejoined Kiss for a major reunion tour. The original lineup thrilled fans worldwide. The tour became one of the most lucrative in rock history.

The reunited band recorded “Psycho Circus” in 1998. However, Frehley’s involvement was minimal. He contributed only one song, “Into The Void.” The reunion continued through the Farewell Tour in 2001-2002.

Later Years and Final Performances

After leaving Kiss again in 2002, Frehley toured extensively as a solo artist. His sets featured Kiss classics alongside his solo material. His most recent performance was at Providence’s Uptown Theater in September 2025.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Kiss in 2014. President Donald Trump included Kiss among Kennedy Center Honorees for 2025. Frehley had been working on new solo material at the time of his death.

Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley released a joint statement. “We are devastated by the passing of Ace Frehley,” they said. “He was an essential and irreplaceable rock soldier during some of the most formative foundational chapters of the band.”

Bret Michaels from Poison wrote, “Ace, my brother, I surely cannot thank you enough for the years of great music.” Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready said Ace was “a hero of mine and also I would consider a friend.”

Megadeth bassist David Ellefson shared, “What an icon and what an influence to generations like me.” The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame remembered Frehley as “one of the most recognizable and influential guitarists of all time.”

The Spaceman’s Legacy Lives On

Ace Frehley is survived by his wife Jeanette, daughter Monique, brother Charles, and sister Nancy Salvner. His impact on classic rock artists and the entire music world remains immeasurable.

Frehley once told Guitar World readers, “In retrospect, I should have practiced more.” But his spontaneous, unschooled approach became his greatest strength. He did his best work when not thinking, just letting it flow.
