The Rolling Stones released a track called “Rough and Twisted” under the alias The Cockroaches.
Only 1,000 vinyl copies were pressed and shipped to select independent record stores worldwide.
Each record came in a plain white sleeve with no artist name, label, or catalog number printed on it.
Sounds of the Universe, a vinyl record shop in London’s Soho neighborhood, received just 14 copies.
The shop is located in the same area of London where the Rolling Stones held some of their earliest rehearsals decades ago.
Each copy was priced at approximately $13.54.
Universal Music contacted the store only the day before the release date.
Owner Angela Scott described the call: “They called us on Friday and told us that they had some records for us and could we sell them on Saturday.”
All 14 copies sold within minutes of the store opening.
Secondary market listings appeared on eBay within hours at prices far above the original retail cost.
At least one buyer played the record aloud outside the shop so fans still in line could hear it.
Listeners described the track as blues-influenced and “very old school,” pointing to a direction consistent with the Hackney Diamonds era.
“Rough and Twisted” has since been confirmed as a track on the finished album.
